Recreation.gov Announces 2022 “Share Your Story” Writing Contest for Outdoor Adventurers

The second annual competition seeks stories that have touched hearts, inspired laughter and created memorable outdoor experiences for the chance to win valuable prizes.

Recreation.gov launched its second annual “Share Your Story” adventure writing contest, inviting visitors to U.S. federal public lands to submit stories detailing their experiences of exploration and time spent in the great outdoors. Experiences must have taken place between January 1, 2020 and April 30, 2022. Visitors can submit stories from now until April 30, 2022 for a chance to win great prizes and have their story featured on Recreation .gov. The inaugural 2021 competition generated nearly 1,200 entries.

“When Recreation.gov first launched the ‘Share Your Story’ contest in 2021, we set out to discover stories of people across the country who got out to experience nature in new ways, and in particular how these experiences helped them find peace, quiet, or adventure during the first year of the pandemic,” said Rick DeLappe, program manager at Recreation.gov. “We were blown away by the entries, including many covered memorable moments with loved ones and a new sense of gratitude and appreciation for public lands and waters. We look forward to more stories in 2022 about how the great outdoors has brought people the peace, pleasure and a sense of oneness, with nature, family or new friends you meet along the trail.

Entrants can submit stories that fall into two of four categories, including lore (old and new), motorhomes/RVs, family trips, and activities and adventures.

“As we enter the third year of this global pandemic, the outdoors continue to provide comfort and solace,” said Eugenie Bostrom, leader of the Recreate Responsibly coalition. “Bringed together by a love of the places that call us home, our outdoor community continues to grow as more and more people see the benefits of nature. The Recreate Responsibly Coalition, in conjunction with Recreation.gov, invites you to share your perspective and experiences on responsible and holistic outdoor recreation.

As we reflect on the benefits nature provides during difficult times, we can rely on storytelling to keep us connected and comforted. By celebrating stories of outdoor adventures or finding peace in nature, we can see ourselves in each other and in the places that unite us. The genesis of #RecreateResponsibly is to care for each other and the places where we play or find comfort, and we can share this through insightful and uplifting memories of our experiences.

Entrants can enter up to two stories during the contest period for a chance to be one of 29 winners of various prizes, including:
